In Australia, methamphetamine as emerged has an important drug of concern in the last two decades. New psychoactive substances emerge every year, often with the potential to cause harm.

NCCRED's purpose is to proactively reduce harm from these new and emerging drugs.

Our work

We meet our purpose through three objectives:

Increasing access to clinical interventions

There are limited treatment options for people who use methamphetamine and other emerging drugs,

Through our clinical research program, we are advancing the research and evidence base to improve outcomes for people who use these drugs.

Enabling health responses to emerging drugs of concern

The rapid emergence of new psychoactive substances is a key public health challenge in Australia, and effective information-sharing is crucial.

Through the Prompt Response Network, we support national information-sharing to give people who use drugs, peer organisations, health professionals, government agencies and researchers the information they need to make effective decisions.

Translating evidence-based information

People working in  alcohol and other drug (AOD) services and the broader health sector find it difficult to access the reliable information they need to deliver effective care.

Our resources communicate evidence-based, timely information for clinicians supporting people who use drugs.

Our approach

Across our portfolio of work, three principles define our approach:

We collaborate

to support new and existing networks, develop new interventions and treatments and to open avenues of communication and participation for the broader community.

We generate

new clinical research opportunities and outcomes, growing the evidence base for solutions.

We translate

and disseminate information and research through a range of channels for diverse audiences.
